Photo Retouching Example

Retouching digital photographs is a way to improve the quality of your graphic and add effects that add tone, style and character to the end result.
In the raw shot, Rock's hat creates a shadow on his brow. The yellow cab and lights behind him draw the eye away from his face. Poor lighting has made his white shirt tint blue and his eyes are very dark and lifeless. In the touched up photo, I increased the brightness. I added a subtle light reflection about the iris of his eyes to add some life. To make Rock the focal point again, I added a blur effect to the background.
Ava didn't like what she saw in her raw shot. Here's how she responded to her photo:

My eyes.. don't know where those lines and puffiness came from! And my left eye is crooked! I have weird shadows on my face, nose, forehead, cheeks. My lipstick is a bad color and is uneven! My teeth don't look like that! They look all yellow and black and crooked! And my chin and neck looked bad and lined, and I'd like to get the hair off my face and neck.

Here's what I did for her to touch up the photo:

First, I re-centered the pupil and iris in Ava's left eye to match the direction of the right -- which was the most difficult part of this project. Once I'd accomplished that, I evened out the color tone in her skin and lightened the area under her eyes in order to reduce the puffy look around her cheekbone. Next, I added shadows to create the illusion of depth and remove creases. Darkening the color of Ava's gums gives her lips a fuller look. Finally, I brightened her teeth and smoothed out the color in her lips.
