Choosing a Good Domain Name

Selecting an appropriate domain name for your business or web enterprise requires strategy, usability, creativity and research.

You can have more than one domain name point to your web site!

Good domain names have any combination of the following characteristics.

  • Contains a business name / DBA that is available through the Secretary of State
  • Brief or simple
  • Easy to remember
  • Created with strategically selected keywords as apart of your search engine positioning efforts
  • Phonetically spelled -- even if spelled incorrectly!
  • Don't require you to spell them (especially for the radio and phone conversations)
  • Don't require you to explain anything about them -- like say "dash" or "the numeral"
  • Contains a common misspelling
  • Appropriately abbreviated
  • Avoids negative connotations or relationships with undesirable organizations or ideas. This is especially important if you plan to localize your marketing efforts and/or translate your web site content into different languages.
  • End in an appropriate suffix (.com, .org, etc.)
  • Honors the limitations of domain names
  • End in .com (people seem to remember these better than any others since they were the most frequently used of the first ones out)
