Buying Domain Names Can Be Like Gambling
It's easy to get caught up in registering domain names and
buying up way more than you need. (Trust me! I've done it!) This
can become a very expensive process because it is many times based
on fear of losing the domain name you want or fear of a competitor
getting the clever domain name you thought of. There are people
who have done this and held onto domain names in the hopes that
some company will come along and offer to buy the domains for a
lot of money. Most often, this does not happen.
The Domain You Choose Can Affect Your Search Engine Rank
Yes! The search engines spider not only the content of your
site, the tags and metatags in the code, but also your domain
name. It's important to research the keywords you are using on
your site to determine the best keywords to include in your domain
name.
Domain Names: Branding & Communication
Some domain names are hard to say. Some can be mistaken for
other words. Some are too "cutesy" or overly-clever for
it to serve your brand. (The tendency to do the latter generally
arises when you find a competitor who has already taken your first
choice.)
Including numbers in your domain name can be helpful or hurtful
to your brand. Do we spell out the number or write the numeral (one
or 1?) as in numberonecoach.com / number1coach.com
Consider selecting a domain name like you might chose a phone
number -- something easy to recall and say out loud.
It's also important to avoid using words that could be confused
with another concept or spelling. Consider these examples by
saying them out loud:
americanled.com / americanlead.com
markandersen.com / marcanderson.com
sixthsense.com / sixsense.com
sendsus.com / census.com
domainnamz.com / domainnames.com / domainames.com
Even My Domain Name Has Caused Trouble
Even in my own domain causes me some trouble from time to time.
Sometimes, people confuse the word that for the word dot.
"There are 2 dots?" they ask. (websites.fly.com -or-
websitesdotfly.com) And I'll tell you that I've considered
changing it -- every time confusion like this happens!
