"Green" Renewable Energy Web Hosting Review

Articles on Green Hosting

On first impression, SolarHost.com appeared to be a credible hosting company. It had a well branded, run-of-the-mill site for its own web presence. I was excited to see that they had live chat and a toll free number, only the live chat app did not work and my phone experience proved less than satisfactory.

On my first call, I got an operator message saying that "all circuits were busy" and to "try my call again later." (This happened again when I called again later.)

When I finally reached someone -- 10 minutes -- I arrived at technical support, which was an unpleasant surprise. They told me (repeatedly) that I dialed the incorrect extension. "What is the correct extension?" I asked. "You have reached first-level technical support. We do not have answers to this question." Another unpleasant surprise.

We went around and around -- my trying to get to the right person and him reading stock replies to my questions. They were neither able to provide me the correct extension or to transfer me to the correct person. I finally asked for a supervisor -- to whom he did not connect me. While the representative did offer to take my number and have the manager call me back, I learned it would take up to 24 hours to do so. There was a delay in relay time, so my sense is that this particular provider off- shores their support staff or is an off shore company.

I find this company questionable at best.

More investigation reveals that the mystery man running this company has his has solar panels at his house, but the servers actually reside at a data center. This would not be problematic except that his site claims "SolarHost is an internet company powered only by the sun." It sounds like a truth in advertising disaster to me.
