Web Hosting
|
What's Involved
|
First, you need to decide whether to host internally or
externally. If you choose to host externally, you must decide what
is important to you in a hosting provider and select one that
is right for you.
Whether you are hosting internally or externally with a web
hosting provider, the steps involved are the same
- The domain name you
choose must be pointed to the selected web hosting provider.
- A new account needs to be established on the web
host's server. This will provide the web developer access to the account using a
username and password.
- Depending up on what kind of features your web site has,
additional software may need to be installed on the server,
like a database, server extensions or email server-- and
possibly a staging environment.
- A "staging environment" is another part of the web
server where the completed web files are moved. The stage is
an identical environment to the "live" server, or
"production server" where the system may be tested
to ensure it is working properly.
If you haven't dealt with web sites before, this process can be
very technical. Generally, to make it easier, I handle these tasks
for my clients.
