Preserving Your Web Site Assets

Any time you build something for your business, you are creating an "asset."

Some assets you may be familiar with include the "hard" kind, like

  • Equipment
  • Furniture
  • Property

Soft Assets

Assets you may not have considered are called "soft assets."  Some of these things may include:

  • Relationships, partnerships and alliances you've built
  • Future earnings
  • Databases
  • Knowledge
  • Research results
  • Trademarks or trade names (e.g. your company or product name or logo)
  • Web Design, files
  • Domain Names

For more information about assets, visit:

asset: an item that you own that has value.

soft assets: an "intangible" that you own that has value.

What to Collect

After you've completed a web project, be sure to obtain the things on my Web Site Asset List

Why Collect?

It's tempting to leave everything in the hands of whoever is helping you with your web site. What if your helper is...

  • Out of town?
  • Hospitalized?
  • Dies?

It will cost you more in your time to recover or recreate these assets than it would be to invest in obtaining a proper collection.

Some assets are created at no cost to you, adding value to your business relationship. So be prepared to negotiate a fair price.
