Basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Three  C's

The three C's of basic search engine optimization are code, copywriting and community. All of these basic steps will help you get one step closer to ranking well on search engines.

Step 1: Code

Make sure that keywords appear between the following HTML tags:

Tag

Example of Use Hints

TITLE

<TITLE>A Business Case for Philanthropy: Doing Well by Doing Good</TITLE> The title of the page is what displays hyperlinked on search engines after a search is performed.

HEAD

<H1>A Business Case for Philanthropy: Doing Well by Doing Good</H1> HEAD 1 and 2 tags get higher priority than 3, 4 or 5, however, they all have priority over copy provided that the copy supports the tag content.

META

<META name ="description" content="PDP Services provides ">

<META name ="keyword" content= "philanthropy, corporate citizenship, corporate citizen, corporate contributions,  contributions, charitable giving, giving to charities, charity, charities, giving, donations, donating, grants, policies, programs, foundations ">

Alone META tags do very, very, very little. In combination with the above, they can add that little power to what would already be a sensible optimizing schedule. The two most important META tags are "keyword" and "description".

ALT

<IMG SRC="logo.gif" width="155" height="84" ALT="PDP Services> By adding ALT attributes -- or the "alternative text" within the IMG SRC tag --  a hypertext pop up will appear in the browser when a user puts their mouse over an image.

In addition to making a web site more accessible to visitors with disabilities, using the ALT attribute can help you improve your rank when populated by keywords.

Step 2: Copywriting

Copywriting -- the meat of your page or content that appears between the BODY tags -- plays an important role in ranking your site in search engines.

Make sure that none of the copy has the same color as the background. Webmasters of the past used this technique to hide content within the page to gain added weight on a particular set of keywords. Search engines have gotten wise and either subtract valued ranks or do not list the site at all.

Step 3: Community: Presence, Promotion, & Popularity

Since some search engines place value on the popularity of the site, it's important to build link-sharing relationships with other webmasters (in- and outbound traffic is important)

You can improve your popularity when you develop a greater presence by listing your web site in as many applicable directories as possible.

Publishing articles in industry specific portals and news sources, and to otherwise be active in the online community by participating in threaded discussions and online networks.

Since all of these other web sites presumably are spidered by search engines, they will give you added traffic and an increased rank.
