Writing Guidelines for Ranking High on Search Engines

Use this writing style guide -- in addition to Search Engine Optimization techniques -- to improve your rank on search engines.

Not just any old keyword will do.

Unfortunately, you can't go to a search engine like Google or AltaVista and type in words you think will work for your ranking purposes. They need to be researched against a database that collects keyword terms that are actually being typed in by users. You'll need to work with an Search Engine Optimizer (SEO) or Positioner (SEP) to do this. The added benefit is the SEO or SEP will also recommend additional words, terms or phrases to your campaign that you may not have considered. Your search engine professional's job is to find you possible words, terms or phrases that will most likely be effective.

The more keywords, the better?

Using ridiculous numbers of keywords in your copy might get you a higher ranking, you may lose credibility to your visitors. Weave keywords into your copy conscientiously -- inserting as many keywords as possible without losing the readability and flow of your topic.

  • Each page should be between 250-300 words.

  • Write 3 headlines on the page, each one containing a targeted keyword term.

  • Incorporate the keyword term as many times as possible and as reasonable throughout the copy.

  • Use the keyword in reference links to other pages on your site.

  • Do not rearrange the order of the keywords in the term provided to you.

  • You may, however, use punctuation to separate the words.
