Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is the means used to achieve a certain rank for a particular web page on a targeted search engine. It also is the task that is performed after strategic web positioning has been determined.

When referring to to search engine optimization, you may assume that the attempt to rank on search engines is done "organically" -- or rather, by using traditional method of using keywords all over your site's content and code, to achieve a certain rank.

Search engines perform their own "scans" of sites -- called "spidering" --  to be sure the site actually uses the keywords identifies and establish some context. Our article "What Goes on in Search Engines" provides more detail about how search engines work.

Things to consider:

• Do you need to position your web site before you optimize?
• Major search engines and directories attract more distinct visitors than any other web sites. 
• Consider how your competitors are using search engine optimization.
• Search engine optimization is less critical for businesses that do not intend to attract the majority of their customers directly through their web site or through search engines -- but through other traditional methods, such as in-person and online networking, direct mail, cold calling, tradeshows, speaking engagements, PR activities, radio, television, and other advertising.
• Pay-per-click advertising will improve your rank on search engines.
