What's really going on in those search engines?

Keywords. When you submit a site to a search engine, the site is automatically ranked according to keywords you provide. These keywords are words that
  • describe the content on your site, or

  • are contained in the content of your site

  • no longer carry weight in the META TAGS

You can also purchase the use of strategic keywords from the search engine or directory to improve your site's ranking.

Listing. Let's say you are a dentist in Minneapolis. When you submit your site to a search engine, you might list keywords like "dentist," "Minneapolis," "tooth decay," and "Minnesota." The search engine will then automatically "scan" your site to see if you actually use these keywords, how often you use them, where in your site these keywords are located and how the keywords are treated.
Ranking Through varying formulas, the search engines will then rank your site according to relevance with these keywords. When someone enters a search using those terms, your site will be listed -- but not necessarily in the top ten.
Searching. Let's say a web surfer is looking for a dentist in the Twin Cities. That surfer goes to a search engine and enters "dentist and Minnesota."
The search engine will then list a number of sites, based on the relevance of each to the search terms submitted by the web surfer.
Positioning. Obviously, you want your site to be one of the first listed. However, there are hundreds of other dentists in Minnesota. What can be done to increase the chances your site will appear sooner rather than later?
