Usability testing can be conducted either with a prototype or with a completed site or application. Qualified test subjects can be recruited from the audience that will eventually be using the site or application.

It is important to try to recruit test subjects who have not been part of the web design or development team. There is the risk that the results may be affected -- intentionally or unintentionally -- because of any emotional investments they have made in their work.
