3rd party applications / third party applications -- sometimes used interchangeably with the term hosted applications -- is web-based software that has been created to fill a general need. These needs may be task focused, industry focused or enterprise focused.

Advantages of 3rd Party Applications

The advantages to using 3rd Party Applications include:

Compared to custom applications, they are relatively inexpensive to set up and operate
If your 3rd party application is also leased, generally someone else is handling hardware and web server issues.
Many 3rd party applications can be purchased as a software download or downloaded for free as apart of the open source movement

Drawbacks to 3rd Party Applications

The drawbacks to using 3rd Party Applications include:

If the application is also a leased and hosted application and the lessor goes out of business, you may lose your complete investment
Your organization must adjust the manner of doing business to the application -- versus the other way around.
